The International Institute for Research and Education in Power System Dynamics is pleased to announce the tenth symposium (and seventh since the IREP was formed) dedicated to the discussion, research and innovation for solutions of the complex problems facing the electric power industry.

A wide variety of operational and markets models are being implemented under a careful step by step approaches so that the mistakes of the past are not repeated. Technological innovations, driven by increases in primary fuel costs and scarcity of fossil fuels are targeting in generating technologies, delivery technologies and efficiency. Investments in grid expansion have lagged load and generation growth with heavy reliance on new technologies for more efficient utilization of the power grid. This trend resulted in operating the system closer to its limits with the subsequent vulnerability to disturbances and complex transients. Operational reliability, the expectation that the system will perform as intended, has been adversely affected by deregulation and lack of clear incentives for grid enhancements. The recent series of major blackouts around the world have brought into focus renewed interest in operational reliability. Around the world major initiatives have been undertaken to improve power grid reliability, such as the creation of the ERO for the North American system. New and improved reliability assessment methodologies and approaches, policies, operational procedures and control center tools are all important for revitalizing operational reliability. Papers are sought in all aspects of these issues.

PREFERRED TOPICS
Contributions are sought that answer the above questions and, in particular, refer to any of the following topics:
  • Reactive (static and dynamic) power management
  • Load dynamics and its impact on grid security
  • Wide area protection and emergency control
  • GPS synchronized measurement applications
  • Control center technologies, visualization
  • New technologies for state estimation and system visibility
  • Dynamic loading of components and implications to system security
  • Implications of increased fault current
  • Reliability analysis under utility restructuring
  • Regulatory trends and implications to system reliability
  • Handling of reserves, frequency regulation, voltage support, and reactive power in a market environment
  • Dynamic security assessment and control
  • On-line angle and voltage stability assessment
  • Control center applications
  • Power system restoration
  • Issues in inter-RTO operations
  • Formulation of operational reliability standards
PROCEEDINGS

Symposium registrants will receive advance copies of all papers. A Proceedings CD containing the full text of all presentations and discussions will be distributed after the event. The proceedings of previous Symposia, edited by Lester Fink, have constituted state-of-the-art references.
